Remembering God's Big Story of Redemption

Here is a prayer for today based upon Genesis 12:1-3
1 Now the Lord said to Abram,

“Go forth from your country,
And from your relatives
And from your father’s house,
To the land which I will show you;
2 And I will make you a great nation,
And I will bless you,
And make your name great;
And so you shall be a blessing;
3 And I will bless those who bless you,
And the one who curses you I will curse.
And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.”

Gracious and Sovereign Father, remembering your big story of redemption is not only a great joy but a critical discipline. For so many different narratives compete for our hearts, days, energy, and resources. Remind us today of the main story line that unfolds in the Bible, connects all of history, and reveals your generous heart. And help us once again to find our place in this story. 

We praise you for making incredible promises to an unsuspecting pagan, Abram--promises you alone can keep. Indeed, from beginning to end your story is a story of sovereign grace. 

Father, thank you for the promise of the land. It began in the Garden of Eden, continued in the land of Israel, and will culminate in the new heaven and new earth. Place and space matter to you. You have promised to redeem and restore your entire fallen world, not just one part of it. We praise you for your inviolate plans and great strength. 

Thank you for the promise of the seed. From the one man Abram, you created a great nation as the birthing cana of the Messiah, Jesus. You promised the seed of the woman would crush the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15), and you did not lie. Jesus came into the world to destroy the work of the devil, and he has succeeded. His cross and resurrection guarantee that just like Abraham, we are counted righteous in your sight by faith (Genes 15:6; Romans 4). We praise you for the everlasting gospel of your saving grace. 

Thank you for the promise of the blessing. Father, it has always been your plan to redeem a family from all families on the earth. Indeed, you made Abram (Abraham) the father of many nations. All of history is bound up with your commitment to redeem your people "from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages" (Revelation 7:9). We praise you for your magnanimous heart and measureless generosity. 

Father, thank you for making us characters in and carriers of your great story of redemption. So let us live and so let us love. In Jesus' name we pray, with gratitude and awe. Amen.

Lord, thank you for speaking to me and helping me see that deep down my desire for people to know Christ is often colliding with my desire for people to like me. Titus 3:1-7 Prayer

I've started something a little different lately and that is as I'm listening to sermons or reading Christian articles, rather than taking notes, I'm turning those notes into prayers. I am patterning this off of John 17 and Jesus (High Priestly) Prayer as he spoke theology in those verses and confirmed truths with the Father while also praying for His disciples and for all believers.  Here is a prayer after reading and studying Titus 3:1-7 Thank you God for your salvation. That we are not saved by our works. But You remind me of my need to do good works. You have set and established rulers over us. You remind me to obey You first and foremost. Lord, make my speech gentle, humble, and be gentle to all people. I am reminded God that I once was foolish, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures. Lord, what a privilege it is each day to grow in my relationship with You because I know each day how prone I am to go a different direction. I struggle Lord daily to seek my own will and think that my life is meant to serve myself. I thank you for the time to reflect on You and all that You have for me. Help me to have my day defined by You and then to know how you are leading me. I feel at times that You speak to me in so many ways. And yet I am not sure that my focus is securely on You, but I thank You that Your spirit is at work in me, speaking to Me and giving me strength and direction each day. Guard my steps. Help me to follow Your guidance so that I find wisdom to serve You in every situation. Keep me humble as I am often not serving You or have that tendency each day. Keep me productive.
